Working together on the road ahead
Thank you to everyone who came or watched last Tuesday’s faculty and staff forum. We had a great turnout and many more watched online. I was very pleased to see that so many of you are prepared to help with our challenges on the road ahead.
For those who missed the forum, the presentation slides and a video recording are available on The Point.
As UI Hospitals and Clinics CEO Ken Kates and I noted at the forum, our financial challenges are serious, but not overwhelming. With all of us working together, we can make changes that will help us reduce our expenses, improve our service, and increase our revenue.
We have a number of initiatives already underway to help reduce expenses, including, but is not limited to, lowering full-time equivalent staffing in areas that will not affect patient care or service; continuing to improve quality, safety, and patient experience; increasing efficiency; and enhancing revenue. Administrative champions assigned to each area are working with faculty and staff members to ensure successful implementation of the initiatives, including plans for sustaining positive changes.
In my columns in the next few weeks I will feature each of the initiative areas, including more details about the projects, the champions, and what we can do to help. We also received some very good questions that I will be addressing in the weeks ahead.
My thanks to those who have already submitted ideas for how we can reduce our expenses and improve quality and revenue. Please continue to submit suggestions online, on paper in the suggestion box stationed across from the Fountain Dining Room, or share them with your supervisor or department head. All suggestions will be carefully evaluated.
As we have seen, the world of health care is changing and we need to adapt to continue to be successful in our tripartite mission. I have never been more grateful for the talented and dedicated people we have here, and know that each of you will do your best to help make us even stronger as we move forward.
