Being Thankful

As we pause and reflect on the ways we are thankful this holiday season I would like to personally express my gratitude to each of you who give so much of yourselves working, learning, and volunteering with UI Health Care. Every one of you contributes to improving the lives of others through patient care, teaching, and biomedical research and to our overall success as Iowa’s only comprehensive academic medical center.

As a gesture of appreciation for everyone’s hard work and dedication, we will again be providing a complimentary Staff Appreciation Meal for all UI Health Care employees and volunteers on Thursday, Dec. 14. In addition, all employees and volunteers who are scheduled to work on the main campus on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas day will receive a free holiday meal. Details including the locations, times, and menus for the meals, and arrangements for employees at offsite locations will be available on The Loop.

We all owe an extra “thank you” to the managers and staff of Food and Nutrition Services who spend additional hours planning, preparing, and serving these special meals.

But we don’t need to wait to share our gratitude on these special days. We should be saying thank you to each other year round—just as our patients do. Throughout the year we receive countless notes from individuals who are grateful for the many ways in which our employees exceed expectations. You can read hundreds of comments from our grateful patients on this site on The Loop, and a few are highlighted below.

“Everyone was very helpful and friendly . . . I am so thankful we have a hospital of this quality so close.”

“Knowing I would get premiere care in a world class facility. Faith in the team that is UI Hospitals and Clinics lifted spirits and gave us all hope. Thank you.”

“The care I was given was above and beyond. These people are my coworkers, but they went out of their way to insure my privacy and comfort! I see this every day that I am at work, but it an amazing feeling being on the other side! Thank you everyone!”

I, too, am grateful and say “thank you” to everyone working, learning, and volunteering with UI Health Care for your dedication to our tripartite mission and our vision to change medicine and change lives. Best wishes to you and your loved ones for a happy and healthy Thanksgiving holiday!
