Patient Safety Alert: Ciprofloxacin and feeding tubes

Ensure the correct route of administration

There have been several PSN events related to the inappropriate administration of liquid ciprofloxacin via a nasogastric or gastrostomy tube. In these cases, liquid ciprofloxacin was ordered to be given via the PO route of administration but was then administered via the feeding tube because the patient does not take anything by mouth.
