When Dan Berns learned he had the same infection in his heart valve that had taken his brother’s life, he placed his trust in UI cardiothoracic surgeon Arun Singhal, MD, who replaced the valve and cleaned the infection in a complex, four-hour procedure.

Keto diet prevents heart failure in mouse study

Eating a ketogenic diet rescued mice from heart failure, according to a recent study by UI Carver College of Medicine researchers. The team—led by E. Dale Abel, MD, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Internal Medicine—removed a critical protein from heart cells in mice.
