Woman pays tribute to the MICU team who cared for her dying fiancé

When her fiancé, Rusty Maddox, passed away on April 11, 2019, Amber Hand was devastated. She wanted to make sure people remembered him for the kind, strong person he was. She also wanted to honor those who took such good care of him while he was hospitalized. So, she wrote a touching tribute to Rusty’s care team in our Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU).

“No matter how people feel, the staff, doctors, and nurses should be cherished more. They were there for my journey and heart-break. They were kind and compassionate. The MICU NURSES were so caring and straight to the point of what was going to happen. Please thank everyone in the MICU.”

    • I had similar experience when my son was in PICU back in 1994. I called the nursing staff there, “angels of mercy”. Even though my son was not going stay with us for long, they still treated him with compassion and respect and covered him with a beautiful quilt and always made sure his head was propped up with a pretty quilt also. It touched our hearts so deeply at the time and will never be forgotten. Nurses would stop me in the halls and give me a silent hug. Sometimes it’s the small things that can make the situation more bearable. There are angels among us and many are disguised as nurses!
