UI Hospitals & Clinics nurses walk to promote health and well-being

Nurses at UI Hospitals & Clinics devote their time to caring for others, but to encourage them to focus on their own health and well-being, Cindy Dawson, MSN, RN, CORLN, chief nurse executive, led a 30-minute walk with nurses on Oct. 3 as part of Iowa’s Healthiest State Walk.

Why the walk? UI Wellness and members of the Department of Nursing and Patient Care have been discussing strategies related to the wellness of our nursing workforce. One idea from the committee: Participate in the Healthiest State Walk. So after a meeting, nurses from the Department of Nursing’s Retention Committee and Staff Nurse Council grabbed their pedometers—given to them by UI Wellness—and went for a walk.

“This is such a wonderful collaboration between these two departments,” says Sara Caven, MSN, RN, CENP, director of centralized functions and Magnet Program. “And it is a testament to Cindy’s commitment to the health and well-being of our nurses.”

The Healthiest State Initiative encourages Iowans to promote health and wellness. Each year, hundreds of people across the state walk for 30 minutes as part of the Healthiest State Walk to demonstrate their commitment to a healthier Iowa. UI Health Care has participated in the walk since its inception in 2011.
