We heard you: Changes to hospital entrances/exits effective Sept. 8

Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8, several changes will be made to the current hospital entry points to improve the entry/screening process for patients, visitors, and staff. The changes are being made in response to feedback, as well as upcoming construction projects. We appreciate your continued support during this time.

Fountain Lobby Entrance

Faculty and staff will now be able to enter 24/7 which matches the hours of access for patients and visitors. We’ve used your suggestions to design this entrance which includes separate lanes of entry with directional signage to ease traffic flow.

Pomerantz Family Pavilion, Level 2 skyway

We know that this is one of the busiest entrances/exits for our patients. To help ease traffic flow and ensure social distancing, we’ve made some changes to get you where you need to go faster.

Between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., staff should not use the Level 2 skyway. Instead staff may use the Ramp 4 tunnel to enter and exit (see map for details).

After hours and urgent access to the building is available using the Level 2 skyway. The call box can be used to gain access. View this call box here.

The Level 2 skyway in PFP will continue to be accessible 24/7 for patients and visitors.

Main Entrance, Level 2

This entrance from the Level 2 skyway will be open to patients, visitors, and staff from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday. Screening operations in the Main Entrance lobby will be moved to Level 2 near the escalators. There will be separate lanes of entry with directional signage to ease traffic flow.

Main Entrance, Level 1

The staff-only entrance on Level 1 south of the main entrance will continue to be open 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Patients and visitors should be redirected to use the Fountain Lobby Entrance or the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital Main Entrance.

  1. Has there been any thought into allowing employees who leave after 9pm to use the Level 2 exit/entrance by the escalators? Currently, if we want to use the walkway from the hospital to Ramp 3/Transportation center we have to either walk outdoors or walk outside over to the elevator building which is also outdoors. It’s not so bad right now but with winter and bad weather upon us it would be appreciated if those of use who work night hours could easily access the walkway. Also, there is a risk to us as it is night time and there are not a lot of people around if something showed happen. Thank you.

  2. It would be very much appreciated if evening staff could exit the main hospital building via the skywalk either from Level 2 or the main entrance. I leave the building at 2120 and park in the Hawk Lot. I now have to walk outside to the transportation center, last night in the rain, and I don’t really feel safe walking in the dark by myself. I believe that we have to badge in to get onto the skywalk from either ramp 2 or 3 after hours so there aren’t visitors coming into the building that way at night so could it be set up that staff have to use their badge to get onto the skywalk from the main building when they leave? Thank you.

  3. Can the hand sanitizer station by the escalator on the employee side possibly be brought back? I like to use that on my way out at night after touching the door handles in the stairwell.

  4. weekend thirdshifter here. is the level 2 skywalk from ramp 4 still available after hours? Ive been told that it is accessible via callbox, but i’ve also been told after pushing the call box button that the entrance in question is closed to all after 1am. hoping for clarification?
    thank you.

  5. It would be nice to have a covered walkway from Ramp 1 to the fountain entrance so staff does not have to walk outside in poor weather, since we can’t come in any closer entrance. It is not fun starting your shift in damp clothes!
