This Saturday, more than 70,000 Hawkeye fans will travel to Kinnick Stadium to cheer on the Hawkeyes. To increase pedestrian safety, portions of Hawkins Drive outside the stadium will close on game days.
Beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, (2 1/2 hours prior to the 6:30 p.m. kickoff), Hawkins Drive will be closed to traffic between Melrose Avenue and Evashevski Drive/Hospital Main Entrance Drive and will remain closed until two hours after the game has ended.
UI police officers will be at the closures to facilitate access to all locations with UI Hospitals and Clinics and UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Access to the Main Entrance as well as Hospital Parking Ramps 1 and 2 will be maintained at all times.
Please help direct our patients and visitors to park in Hospital Parking Ramps 1 and 2, to enter through the Main Entrance, to arrive and leave at least two hours before and after the game, and encourage them to avoid driving on Melrose Avenue.
Traffic from the north:
Emergency Department traffic (ambulances and private vehicles) are asked to take Highway 6 to Grand Avenue, then west to the Emergency Department entrance. (If patients seeking the Emergency Department arrive on Hawkins Drive, they will be sent to the Main Entrance to access the Emergency Department via Elevator D.)
Labor and delivery, IVF, ophthalmology, and radiation oncology patients will be asked to take Highway 6 to Grand Avenue then go south on South Grand Avenue to South Entrance Drive of UI Hospitals and Clinics.
Traffic heading east on Hawkins Drive will be screened and football fan vehicles will be rerouted at this point. Any vehicles stating “hospital” in the screening process will be allowed through to the point of the closure at Evashevski and Hawkins.
Traffic from the south:
Emergency Department traffic (ambulances and private vehicles) arriving via Highway 6/Riverside Drive will take Grand Avenue to the Emergency Department. Entrance Drive. (If Emergency Department patients arrive via Melrose Avenue, they will need to take South Grand Avenue around the traffic circle to reach South Entrance Drive.)
Labor and delivery, IVF, ophthalmology, and radiation oncology patients arriving via Highway 6/Riverside Drive will take Grand Avenue west to the traffic circle then go south on South Grand Avenue to South Entrance Drive. (If patients arriving via Melrose Avenue, they will need to take South Grand Avenue to the traffic circle then back on south Grand Avenue to reach South Entrance Drive.)
As in years past, South Hospital Drive at South Grand Avenue will be blocked starting at 6 a.m. on gamedays, continuing through the end of the game. (This is marked in gold on the map.) The area south of Kinnick Stadium on Melrose (shown as dark blue on the map) will be closed to west bound traffic beginning one hour prior to the game, then open again after kickoff. This section will also close again after halftime of the game to east and west-bound traffic and continue for approximately one hour post-game.
