Kamal Rahmouni, PhD, and Andrew Norris, MD, PhD

Andrew Norris, MD, PhD, and Kamal Rahmouni, PhD, have been appointed interim co-directors of the University of Iowa Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center (FOEDRC), effective Jan. 1, 2022.

Norris and Rahmouni will succeed Dale Abel, MD, PhD, who announced last month his plans to leave Iowa at the end of the year.

“I am delighted that Dr. Norris and Dr. Rahmouni have agreed to partner in leading the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center during this time of transition,” says Brooks Jackson, MD, MBA, UI vice president for medical affairs and the Tyrone D. Artz Dean of the Carver College of Medicine. “I am confident that they will maintain the momentum that the center has built and continue to foster collaborations throughout the institution and nation.”

Norris is a professor in the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics and serves as director of the department’s endocrinology and diabetes division. Norris, who serves as associate director of the FOEDRC, also holds a faculty appointment in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Rahmouni is a professor in the Department of Neuroscience and Pharmacology. He also holds a faculty appointment in the Department of Internal Medicine and serves as director of the intercollegiate Obesity Research and Education Initiative.

A national search for a new director of the diabetes research center will be launched in 2022.
