New UI strategic planning process begins

The university is starting the process of refreshing its existing strategic plan, and in order to inform the new plan, we will refresh our own UI Health Care strategic plan. Other university units and colleges will review and update their strategic plans, as well.

We will align our plan around the areas of focus that will make up the UI strategic plan:

  • Student success
  • Research and discovery
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Engagement

While these areas are not new, their integration is vital to the future success of the UI’s students, faculty, and staff.

To accomplish this, we will establish a steering committing that represents all areas of shared governance within UI Health Care. The steering committee will consist of seven to 11 individuals and be co-chaired by Vice President for Medical Affairs Brooks Jackson and UI Hospitals & Clinics CEO Suresh Gunasekaran.

The first task of the committee will be to understand the current status of UI Health Care in comparison to our peer set utilizing a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) model. The steering committee will also host at least two listening sessions and engage with existing committees throughout UI Health Care to obtain feedback about the current strategic plan, as well as to identify areas of focus and opportunities for future success.

Subsequent to the listening sessions and meetings, the steering committee will develop a draft UI Health Care strategic plan based upon the feedback and submit that draft to the president and provost by Feb. 3, 2020. Following the review from campus leadership, the steering committee will share the draft with UI Health Care faculty, staff, and students; host at least two listening sessions; and engage with existing committees to obtain feedback about the draft strategic plan. The steering committee will submit the final draft to the president and provost by May 1, 2020.

The strategic planning process is an opportunity for our campus community, through shared governance in every college and unit, to actively participate in the future. We welcome your participation so that UI Health Care can take the next step toward our future.
