Updated in-kind donation and gift FAQs for staff

1. Where do I direct inquiries if someone wants to donate to the hospital?

The most helpful impact is through a monetary donation to the University of Iowa Center for Advancement, marked for the UI Hospitals & Clinics Caring Fund or the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital Fund. However, patients and families benefit from in-kind gifts as well. Please direct those wishing to donate new items to uihc.org/donations, uichildrens.org/donate-items or call the automated gift line at 319-467-8087 for detailed information.

2. Are there items patients need more than others?

We accept items year-round for patients of all ages. In order to protect their health and safety, donated items must follow certain rules. Our website gives lists of what can and cannot be accepted as well as a list of local charities that also accept donations.

3. When and where may items be dropped off?

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are only able to accept donations that are shipped directly from a business or retailer to UI Hospitals & Clinics or UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital throughout the 2020 holiday season and until further notice. You can ship items directly to UI Health Care by shopping from our Amazon wish lists. We will resume accepting other types of donations at a later date. Please check back online as circumstances change.

4. What is the in-kind donation form?

The in-kind donation form should be filled out by donors and must be included with all in-kind donations. Donations and gift cards should currently be sent directly from a retailer or business. Please include donor information for us to acknowledge your gift.

5. What if unexpected donations arrive on our unit/clinic?

Please thank the donor for their generosity and explain that our policy directs all in-kind donations to Concierge Services. Due to COVID-19 restrictions we are only able to accept donations that are shipped directly from a business or retailer. If an in-kind donation form was not filled out by the donor(s), please find one on the website or write down the donor name, address, and phone number and attach the information to the item(s). Then call Sheri Austin, Concierge Services, at 319-356-1900 or Dan Mears, UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital, at 319-678-5500, to arrange for the item(s) to be picked up.

6. May donors personally deliver donations to a patient area?

No, they may not. Due to privacy regulations and infection control policies, a UI Health Care Guest Services staff member will accept donations on behalf of the hospital. We will make sure that items go where they are needed most.

7. May food be donated for patients?

Many of our patients have restricted diets and food allergies, so we are unable to accept food donations. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, staff also cannot accept food donations to their unit at this time.

8. A patient (or family member of a patient) in my unit/clinic could benefit from a donated gift item. Who could help me?
