University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, along with Bright Horizons, is continuing to offer back-up child care programming for qualified staff throughout the summer.
In addition to resources available through UI Family Services, Bright Horizons will provide a limited back-up child care service for eligible employees with children under age 12. Eligible staff may register for in-center or in-home child care during their scheduled work shift when traditional arrangements are not available.
Staff who have used the program are pleased with the convenience. Liz Highland, PA, ARNP, NNP, used the back-up child care program multiple times and says she was glad to have that option.
“I used Bright Horizons replacement care program when my daughter’s daycare provider was quarantined due to COVID-19 exposure,” Highland says. “They reimbursed me for my replacement care, and it was very easy to use.”
Tim Weddle, senior nuclear medicine technologist, agrees.
“The program was great for me. With how strict our daycare has become due to COVID-19, our kids missed enough days that my wife ran out of paid time off completely, and there were certain days that I couldn’t miss work,” he says. “The program allowed us to find our own in-home sitter, and they paid them very well, along with canceling our fees. This worked out better for us, as we were able to keep our kids in our home the entire week, with someone that we know and trust, and they were paid well enough that they were more than happy to oblige.”
To be eligible for the program employees must meet the following requirements:
- Be currently employed as an active UI Hospitals & Clinics employee
- Be a regular staff member (50% time or greater) or resident or fellow
- Serve as a frontline employee working in direct patient care and support services (nurses, environmental services employees, food and nutrition employees, radiology techs, social workers, lab techs, and pharmacists, for example)
- Have a dependent child or children ages 12 or younger
Eligible employees will have access to 10 uses of back-up care per year. A modest co-pay will apply to use these services.
