All prescriptions to use ‘plain paper’ across UI Hospitals & Clinics

Starting Tuesday, Dec. 10, HCIS and the Department of Pharmaceutical Care will begin transitioning all prescription printing to “plain paper prescriptions” across the main UI Hospitals & Clinics facility (already in use at off-site clinics). All existing prescription paper trays will be switched to plain paper in coordination with Epic changes to print the appropriate prescription format. This change must be completed by Jan. 1, 2020, to meet compliance requirements.

Prescriptions will no longer print on pre-printed prescription paper (provided by pharmacy). There will no longer be a copy of the prescription printed, as these copies are no longer utilized by internal pharmacies. All other prescription information, including an electronic signature, will remain the same. Controlled substance prescriptions must continue to be signed if they are not electronically prescribed.

Implementation will occur by pavilion; schedule is as follows:

  • Tuesday, Dec. 10: Boyd Tower and General Hospital
  • Wednesday, Dec. 11: Roy J. Carver Pavilion
  • Thursday, Dec. 12: John Colloton Pavilion
  • Friday, Dec. 13: John Pappajohn Pavilion
  • Monday, Dec. 16: Pomerantz Family Pavilion
  • Tuesday, Dec. 17: UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital

Any remaining pre-printed prescription paper can be returned to General Hospital Pharmacy (Elevator C, Level 1). In the event of an extended downtime and handwritten prescriptions must be issued, this paper can be obtained from General Hospital Pharmacy.
