Dr. Uc et al Publish a Series of Articles in Pancreas


In the Nov/Dec issue of Pancreas, Dr. Uc, along with members of the Consortium for the Study of Chronic Pancreatitis, Diabetes, and Pancreatic Cancer, published a series of related articles on standard operating procedures, and accelerating the drug delivery pipeline for acute and chronic pancreatitis.

Pediatrics Faculty Receive New Grants

Congratulations to the faculty below on receiving new grants!

Peg Nopoulos, MD in Psychiatry received a new UG3 from NHLBI for which two Pediatrics faculty are co-investigators: Drs. Amy Conrad and Ed Bell. The award, titled “Transfusion of prematurity early school age follow-up clinical coordinating center” grants $3.97 million over 5 years.





On behalf of the CHSC, Dr. Tom Scholz received an award from HRSA for “Increase access to pediatric mental health services, especially in underserved communities, through telehealth-based behavioral health integration in pediatric primary care in Iowa”. The grant awards $2.2 million over 5 years.

Dr. Kathy Mathews received a grant from the FDA for “2018 Institute for Advanced Clinical Trials for Children”. The award provides $7,500 for the trials.

UISFCH Named Certified Children’s Cardiomyopathy Foundation Program

The children’s hospital has been named a certified Children’s Cardiomyopathy Foundation Program – one of only 38 such programs across the nation. The program recognizes medical center providing high-quality cardiac care and specialized disease management to children with cardiomyopathy.

Other newly accredited centers include University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore, Md.; Children’s Hospital of Michigan, Detroit, Mich.; Children’s Medical Center of Dallas, Dallas, Texas; and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Department to Kick-Off Strategic Planning Initiative

The Department of Pediatrics has had remarkable success over the past decade in advancing our missions and pursuing our goal to be a world-class pediatric program. We are now initiating a multi-phase strategic planning process to set the vision, goals, and strategy for our department for the next decade. This process will afford us the opportunity to critically assess the progress we have made and determine where we need to go next in our pursuit of excellence. Our division and department leaders, including Division Directors, Vice Chairs and the Executive Leadership Team will drive this initiative.  Additionally, all staff will be invited to participate during one or more phases of the process.

Stier Named Chief Wellness Officer

Dr. Amy Stier has been named Chief Wellness Officer in the Department of Pediatrics. In this role, Amy will lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive wellness program to ensure a culture of individual value and respect that will improve faculty wellness. This will include addressing physician burnout. Amy is in the process of establishing a wellness committee to assist her in this role. Interested faculty are encouraged to contact her. Improving faculty well-being is a high priority for our department and this committee will report its findings and recommendations by the end of this fiscal year so that a wellness program can be implemented beginning next summer. Please welcome Amy to this new role.

Grant Writing Seminar 2018 Registration Deadline Reminder

The Research Development Office in the Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development (OVPRED), in collaboration with the Carver College of Medicine Office of Faculty Affairs and Development, are pleased to announce that Dr. John Robertson from Grant Writer’s Seminars and Workshops (GWSW) will conduct the Write Winning Grant Proposals Phase I seminar on Friday, October 26, 2018. A Phase II workshop sponsored by OVPRED will be held in February 2019.
