By the Numbers: HOST

DSC_0145cropMedical students crisscrossing the country for residency interviews can run up a healthy tab on transportation, lodging, and meals. To help trim expenses, the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine’s HOST (Help Our Students Travel) program, launched in 1999, matches interested students with UI alumni households at interview destinations—like Michael Strong (’15 MD), who was paired with Paul Figge (’70 MD, ’75 R, ’76 F) of Aurora, Colo.

• 560 UI medical students served
• +500 UI alumni hosts
• 2,556 overnight stays
• +$400,000 saved by medical students
• 82.4% of student requests filled
• 3 requests per student, on average
