E. Dale Abel, MD, PhD, director of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center at the University of Iowa, received two grants totaling $4 million from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to study the connection between diabetes, obesity, and heart failure.

Abel will work with collaborators at the University of California, Davis, as well as the Sanford Burnham Institute and the Florida Hospital. One four-year, $1.6 million grant will enable a study of the connection between high levels of insulin and heart failure. Another grant, for $2.4 million over four years, will test new drug targets for reducing heart failure risk in people with diabetes.
