Monthly Patient Safety, Quality, and Service Excellence updates from the Chief Medical Officer

Quality updates

Where’s the Beef?

Originally a slogan for the fast food chain Wendy’s in the 1980s, it has since become an all-purpose phrase questioning the substance of an idea, product, or other deliverable. This phrase also applies to Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) when we replace the word “beef” with MEAT: Managed, Evaluated, Assessed, and Treated. Read more about MEAT.

Making improvements a “bite” at a time for our new clinic patients

The leaders of Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa have formed a team focused on the new patient referral process. The goals are: 1) decreasing the time from a phone referral to seeing the patient in clinic and 2) increasing the “value” of the first patient visit. They’ve recently had success in decreasing the amount of time for pathology slides to be reviewed. Read more.

Patient safety updates

Patient safety added to orientation

Patient safety is now being presented at hospital-wide new employee orientation, emphasizing our responsibility in preventing or eliminating potential harm to patients while providing excellent patient care.

New isolation gowns

A new isolation gown is now available in patient care areas, in large and XL large sizes. This new gown has enhanced features: full back coverage, ties at the side/front of gown, and easier removal by pulling at the waist. These improvements provide better protection for staff and patient safety. See removal instructions.

Hand Hygiene update

Congratulations to all! As of Aug. 17, our hand hygiene compliance rate has hit a new all-time high of 92 percent for the week. The compliance rate for the month has jumped to 88 percent (from 86 percent), and the total compliance rate (with 112,000 observations over the last 2.5 years) is 87 percent. This is a remarkable improvement.
