Where’s the Beef?
a slogan for the fast food chain Wendy’s in the 1980s, it has since
become an all-purpose phrase questioning the substance of an idea,
product, or other deliverable. This phrase also applies to Clinical
Documentation Improvement (CDI) when we replace the word “beef” with MEAT:
Managed, Evaluated, Assessed, and Treated. Read

Making improvements a “bite” at a time for our new clinic patients
leaders of Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa
have formed a team focused on the new patient referral process. The goals
are: 1) decreasing the time from a phone referral to seeing the patient
in clinic and 2) increasing the “value” of the first patient visit.
They’ve recently had success in decreasing the amount of time for
pathology slides to be reviewed. Read
Patient safety added to orientation
safety is now being presented at hospital-wide new employee orientation,
emphasizing our responsibility in preventing or eliminating potential
harm to patients while providing excellent patient care.
New isolation gowns
new isolation gown is now available in patient care areas, in large and
XL large sizes. This new gown has enhanced features: full back coverage,
ties at the side/front of gown, and easier removal by pulling at the
waist. These improvements provide better protection for staff and patient
Hand Hygiene update
to all! As of Aug. 17, our hand hygiene compliance rate has hit a new
all-time high of 92 percent
for the week. The compliance rate for the month has jumped to 88 percent
(from 86 percent), and the total compliance rate (with 112,000
observations over the last 2.5 years) is 87 percent. This is a remarkable
