James Gannon (’51 BA, ’53 MD), of Rogers, Ark., and his wife, Shirley, send their greetings and report they are enjoying good health.
John M. Miller (’50 BA, ’53 MD), of Bloomington, Ind., has been retired for 14 years but continues to serve on the boards of the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment and the Indiana Athletic Trainers Board.

Ernest B. Marsolais (’60 BA, ’63 MD, ’67 MS, ’69 PhD), of Shaker Heights, Ohio, was inducted into the Creston (Iowa) High School Hall of Fame. He is medical director of the Cleveland VA Functional Electrical Stimulation Center of Excellence and director of the rehabilitation division in the Department of Orthopaedics at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
Robert G. Carney Jr. (’65 BS, ’68 MD), of Decatur, Ill., is immediate past-president of the Macon County (Illinois) Medical Society.
Thomas J. Dougherty (’68 MD), of Waukesha, Wis., is past-president of the Waukesha County Medical Society and served two six-year terms on the parish council of St. William Catholic Church in Waukesha.
Sheila Nolan Town (’68 MD) practices ophthalmology part time in the Bay Area. Previously she was in private practice in Cleveland and on the faculty at Case Western Reserve University. Prior to that she spent seven years in Edinburgh and London working for the British National Health Service.

Michael Mickelson (’68 BS, ’69 MS, ’72 MD, ’77 R) witnessed the official investiture ceremony last fall of his good friend and fellow UI alum, Arthur Vailas, president of Idaho State University.
Larry D. Beaty (’69 BA, ’73 MD), of Marshalltown, Iowa, retired as director of the UI family medicine residency program at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines in 2006 and opened the Marshalltown Medical Clinic with Ron Terrill (’69 BA, ’73 MD) in 2007.
Gary A. Boeke (’73 MD), an anesthesiologist in St. Cloud, Minn., has served with medical missions providing care to poor areas of the Guatemalan highlands since 1988. He has assisted in developing 12 teams of physicians from the United States to join the missions through Helps International. For his efforts he received the 2007 Caduceus Award from CentraCare Health Foundation of central Minnesota.
Charles R. Caughlan (’70 BS, ’73 MD, ’76 R), of West Des Moines, has served for two years as chief of staff at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. He has been listed in "Best Doctors in America" since 1996.
Mel Chandler (’73 MD, ’75 R) is a mental health professional in Mount Vernon, Wash. His varied career, primarily with nonprofit organizations over the past two decades, has included positions as a lecturing faculty member at Seattle Pacific University, a clinic medical director twice and working in mental health service in New Zealand.
Steffen P. Christensen III (’73 MD), of Fargo, N.D., is medical director of MeritCare Reproductive Medicine Institute, which offers a range of infertility services and an in vitro fertilization lab. He serves the University of North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences as vice chair and associate professor for obstetrics-gynecology and as assistant dean for student affairs for the Southeast Campus.
R. Michael "Mike" Collison (’73 MD), of Strafford, Mo., is medical director for St. John’s Health System. He’s planning more time for traveling, flying, land-speed racing and enjoying his five grandchildren.
Stephen E. Jordan (’69 BA, ’73 MD, ’77 R), of Palos Verdes Peninsula, Calif., retired in 1995.
David W. Kabel (’70 BS, ’73 MD), of Cedar Falls, Iowa, was named Clinical Teacher of the Year by residents of the Blackhawk Area Family Practice residency. He has earned this honor three of the past four years. He practices with Cedar Valley Medical Specialists, P.C. in Waterloo.
Larry T. Mahoney (’73 MD, ’76 R, ’79 F) is a professor of pediatrics in the UI Carver College of Medicine. He served as director of pediatric cardiology from 1995-2006.
J.B. "Brad" McConville (’73 MD, ’76 R) practices at the Centerville (Iowa) Medical Clinic, which has been associated with UI Community Medical Services for a decade. He and his wife, Dewey McConville (’74 PA), have five children, all with doctoral degrees or who are doctoral candidates.
Paul H. Moser (’69 BS, ’73 MD) is semi-retired from his gastroenterology practice in San Diego.
Laura I. Rankin (’73 MD), of Edmond, Okla., is in her 13th year in private practice, currently as a partner with Kidney Specialists of Central Oklahoma. Her daughter, Julie, is a second-year resident in internal medicine at Duke Hospitals, and daughter Jeanne is a strength trainer.
Subhash C. Sahai (’73 MD), of Webster City, Iowa, reports sons Aalok Sahai (’97 BSE, ’01 MD) and Rohit Sahai (’97 BSE) are in Arizona and New York, respectively; and a daughter, Seema Sahai, is doing a dermatology residency at the UI.
Otar Taktakishvili holds the envelope revealing his residency placement in emergency medicine at Stony Brook Teaching Hospitals in New York.
Richard A. Wall (’73 MD) is medical director of Odyssey Hospice in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Kathleen Bishop (’75 R, ’80 R) is an anesthesiologist and acupuncture specialist in Arizona. She is a founding diplomat of the American Board of Holistic Medicine and a Fellow of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture.
Bob Bleicher (’78 MD, ’81 R, ’83 F), of Eagle, Neb., is medical director of HoriSun Hospice in Lincoln. He is also a Nebraska-certified nurseryman and co-owner, along with his wife, Stacie Bleicher (’76 BS, ’79 MD ’82 R), of Eagle Nursery.
Kathryn L. Deason (’78 MD) is a gynecologist in Bedford, N.H. She continues her running and plans some track racing this summer. Her son is a sophomore at Middlebury College, her oldest daughter will graduate from Whitman College and head to Scotland and her youngest daughter is a high school junior.
Gary D. DeVoss (’78 MD) is with Methodist Physician’s Clinic in Council Bluffs, Iowa, where his practice focuses on geriatrics and internal medicine. He is a member of the board of directors for the Alzheimer’s Association. His family includes three sons, Brian, Daniel and Richard.
John R. Ebensberger (’75 BS, ’78 MD), of Greene, Iowa, has switched to emergency medicine after 25 years of solo family practice.
Deborah Olin Heros (’78 MD, ’83 R) is an associate professor of clinical neurology, neuro-oncology, at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and chief of neurology service at University of Miami Hospital. She and her husband, Roberto, have a teenage son, Carlos.
Ronald L. Lacey (’78 MD), of Columbia, Mo., is medical director of the Mid-Missouri Mental Health Center and assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He and his wife, Lisa, have two children, Ben and Nic.
Sam Sandberg (’78 MD), of Maquoketa, Iowa, practices at Genesis Covenient Care in Bettendorf. He and his wife, Susan, have two daughters and enjoy traveling.
Donald C. Trost (’74 BS, ’78 MD, ’78 MS), of East Lyme, Conn., retired after 22 years in pharmaceutical research, development and medical marketing.
Gary D. Volentine (’74 BS, ’78 MD), of Papillion, Neb., has been a gastroenterologist in private practice for 21 years in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Glenn Amundson (’79 MD) is an orthopaedist specializing in back and neck pain in adults. He practices with Heartland Hand & Spine Orthopaedic Center in Overland Park, Kan.

Randy Brenton (’83 MD, ’88 R), of Clear Lake, Iowa, authored and illustrated Fishing With God, and launched a nonprofit organization called Cattle Creek Christian Camp. His other hobbies include hunting, forestry and farming. He practices at the North Iowa Eye Clinic in Mason City. He and his wife, Cheryl, have three children.
Debra Susie Lattner (’83 MD), of Mount Prospect, Ill., is vice president of medical affairs for Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village, Ill.
Timothy J. Moody (’83 MD), of Colton, Wash., attended the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in England from February to May this year.
P. Sue Beckwith (’80 BS, ’84 MD), of Des Moines, Iowa, contributed a $1 million gift to the UI Foundation and is lending her name to the UI’s newest athletic facility, the Beckwith Boathouse, to be built on the banks of the Iowa River in Terrell Mill Park. The facility–which will include an indoor training tank and storage bays for boats–will house the UI rowing team and provide recreational opportunities for the UI campus and Iowa City community. Beckwith is a physician at the Iowa Clinic in Des Moines, specializing in colorectal surgery, and serves as a clinical associate in surgery at UI Hospitals and Clinics. She is a member of the UI Foundation board of directors and the National Iowa Varsity Club board of directors.
Claudia Morrissey (’85 R) was elected president of the American Medical Women’s Association, the largest and oldest multispecialty organization for women health care providers in the United States.
Cassandra Foens (’83 BS, ’87 MD, ’92 R), of Waterloo, Iowa, pledged $150,000 to create a UI endowed fund to annually support a major public lecture. The first Cassandra S. Foens, MD, Lecture will be held during Welcome Week for new and returning students at the start of classes this fall. A radiation oncologist in Waterloo and a fellow of the American College of Radiology, Foens is also a member of the UI Foundation board of directors.
Joseph E. Hart (’84 MS, ’88 MD) is chief of staff at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, president of the Iowa Academy of Otolaryngology for 2008-2010 and serves on the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Board of Governors Committee and Ethics Committee.
Evan Hellwig (’86 MPT), of Springfield, Ohio, has been promoted to professor of athletic training at Cedarville University, effective in August.
Joy Trueblood (’86 MD) opened the Anatomic Pathology Laboratory at The Iowa Clinic in West Des Moines in February. The Iowa Clinic is a physician-owned multispecialty practice in the Des Moines area.
Rob A. Lee (’88 MD), of Urbandale, was appointed to the Commission on Practical Enhancement for the American Academy of Family Physicians, and was elected to the board of the Iowa Medical Society.
Lynn M. Rankin (’88 MD), of Des Moines, was elected in 2007 to serve as the first president of the newly formed Iowa Neurological Association. She presided over the second annual meeting held in February in Coralville.
Timothy Ryken (’88 MD, ’95R, ’07 MS), associate professor of neurosurgery in the UI Carver College of Medicine, is filling a two-year appointment as co-chair of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons Joint Guidelines Committee. He and his wife, Shonda, have four children, Chuck, Kate, Joe and Samantha.
Joseph P. Spurgeon (’88 MD) has been a family practice physician at Prairie Clinic, S.C. in Sauk City, Wis., since 1991.
Robert Thompson (’89 R, ’90 F), of Grand Forks, N.D., is executive medical director and an allergy/immunology specialist for Altru Health System. He also serves as president of the 900-member North Dakota Medical Association.

Jonathan Zarley (’90 MD) is the director of internal medicine at SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium’s Mount Edgecumbe Hospital in Sitka. He and his wife, Caroline, celebrated the birth of their first child, JackOwen Hoyt Zarley, on Aug. 19, 2007.
Laura Frey Law (’90 BSE, ’93 MPT, ’04 PhD), assistant professor in the UI Graduate Program in Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, received the Comprehensive Opportunities in Rehabilitation Research Training (CORRT) multi-center K–12 career development award. The CORRT program is a new NIH initiative that provides research training for physical therapists in tenure-track faculty positions. The UI is one of seven training sites for the program.

Steve Sprague (’93 BS, ’97 MD) is a family practice physician at the Searsport (Maine) Health Center of Waldo County General Hospital.
Chris M. Anderson (’94 BS, ’98 MD) is completing a pediatric surgery fellowship at the University of Texas and plans to practice in Orlando, Fla.
Roy A. Borchardt (’98 MPA), of Houston, is a physician assistant at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Don Ping (’47 BA, ’53 MD) and his wife, Jeanne, discuss the Arizona Mini Medical School program with featured presenter John Fingert (’00 MD/PhD, ’06 F), assistant professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences at the UI Carver College of Medicine. Nearly 100 alumni and friends attended the UI’s inaugural national Mini Medical School in Scottsdale in March. The program topic focused on vision loss and research approaches to common eye conditions. A Medicine Alumni Reception and Dinner was held later in the day.
Kirsten J. Buck (’98 MD, ’02 R), of Menominee, Mich., keeps Iowa City close to her heart. She and her husband, Aaron, have a daughter, Hayden, 4, and a son, Gable, 2, named after Iowa’s former football and wrestling coaches.
John R. Bullinga (’94 BSE, ’98 MD) became director of interventional electrophysiology at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia in 2007. Previously he was an assistant professor at the University of California-San Diego practicing clinical cardioelectrophysiology.
George C. Canas (’98 MD) is a partner nephrologist at Kidney Specialists of Minnesota in Coon Rapids. He and his wife, Shannon, have three children, Melina, 6, Taylor, 4, and Shaun, 19 months.
Tonya Lynn Gray (’94 BS, ’98 MD) is in family practice. Her husband, Timothy L. Mulholland (’93 BS, ’97 MD), is a urologist. They live in Mason City, Iowa, with their three children, Luke, 5, Zack, 3, and Audra, 1.
Scott T. Guenthner (’94 BS, ’98 MD) is president of the Dermatology Center of Indiana, P.C. in Plainfield. He serves on the board of directors of the UI Alumni Association and on the Annual Fund Council of the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. He and his wife, Shannon, have two children, Evan and Grace.
Anupam B. Kharbanda (’98 MD) is an assistant professor of pediatrics at Columbia University. He lives in New York with his wife, Elyse, their 3-year-old son and their daughter, born in November.
Ted M. Kremer (’95 BS, ’98 MD) is a member of the Pediatric Pulmonary Division and director of Pediatric Sleep Medicine at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. He and his wife, Jennifer, have two children, Naomi, 3, and Avery, 8 months.
Angela J. Mortland (’98 MD) is with the U.S. Air Force stationed in Germany at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, where she is chief of ophthalmology.
Janell Powell (’98 R) is chief of medical staff at St. Mary’s Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes, Minn. She practices internal medicine with MeritCare Clinic in Detroit Lakes.
Jason Rexroth (’98 MD) practices at Linn County OB–GYN, P.C. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Pamela M. Schneider-Santamaria (’93 BS, ’98 MD) started her own practice, Neurology Consultants of Nebraska, in Omaha in 2004. She has three children between the ages of 1 and 4.
Aneil M. Shirke (’98 MD/PhD) teaches in the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University, where he completed a psychiatric fellowship in psychoanalysis.
Ann K. Archibald Touney (’98 MD) is on staff at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. She is board certified in hospice and palliative care and internal medicine. She and her husband, Michael, have two children, Grace, 5, and Grant, born in January.
Kean T. Oh (’99 R, ’01 F) practices at Associated Retinal Consultants, P.C. in Williamsburg, Mich. He recently joined Munson Healthcare as a specialist in vitreoretinal surgery.
