Richard Kerber, MD, director of echocardiography and the cardiology fellowship program, and longtime associate director of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, died Nov. 8, 2016. In a UI career that surpassed 45 years, his research focused on cardiac resuscitation. He was a past president of the American Society of Echocardiography.
Rex Montgomery, PhD, professor emeritus of biochemistry whose research brought over $30 million in funding to the UI and whose textbooks transformed biochemistry education, died July 31, 2016. Considered one of the 20th century’s most important carbohydrate biochemists, he was honored with a Distinguished Alumni Award from the UI. In 1973 he established the physician assistant program and served as its director until 1976.
Paul Seebohm, MD, founding director of the Division of Allergy and Immunology (1949-70), died Jan. 8, 2017. During his UI career, he also served as associate dean of medicine and executive associate dean. He was instrumental in creating a family practice training program that served patients throughout Iowa, and he held leadership positions with national organizations, including president of the American Academy of Allergy and Immunology.
