  • During the 2013-2014 school year, more than 7,000 students from 12 Iowa colleges and universities participated in Dance Marathon events, raising more than $2.8 million for University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. The 20th annual UI Dance Marathon generated $1.8 million—a record amount—of this year’s state total.
  • A $1.5 million gift from UI alumnus Norman E. Johnson and his wife, Barbara J. (Bartlett) Johnson, of Naples, Fla., and Franklin, Tenn., will benefit the UI Department of Otolaryngology and UI Children’s Hospital. The Johnsons gave $1 million to create the Paul N. Johnson Professorship, which will support a faculty member with expertise in craniofacial abnormalities. The couple also gave $500,000 to the UI Children’s Hospital Building Fund. The 480,000-square-foot facility, currently under construction, is scheduled for completion in spring 2016.
  • In January, the brothers of Teresa (Sharer) Benoit presented the final installment of a gift from their sister totaling more than $1 million to the UI Fraternal Order of Eagles (FOE) Diabetes Research Center. Jack Sharer and Michael “Mick” Sharer presented the gift in honor of Teresa, who had diabetes most of her life and passed away on March 28, 2013.
