More than 11,000 donors pledged gifts toward the new University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Among them were the Gerdin family, UI Dance Marathon, and Walmart and Sam’s Club associates, each pledging at least $5 million.
The Gerdin family of Solon, Iowa, is among the UI’s most generous contributors, and the impact of their giving is felt across campus. In 2012, three generations of the family made a significant commitment to the hospital building campaign through the Gerdin Charitable Foundation. The UI is grateful for the support of Ann and the late Russell Gerdin; their children, Michael (Nicole) Gerdin, Julie (Eric) Durr, and Angie (Brian) Janssen; and their 12 grandchildren. To recognize the family’s remarkable support for the new children’s hospital, the Gerdin Family Lobby and Nick’s Theater were named in their honor.
“For The Kids!” is a popular tagline that embodies the philanthropic mission of UI Dance Marathon. As the largest student-run fundraising organization on campus, this dedicated group provides year-round support for pediatric oncology and bone marrow transplant patients and their families. UI Dance Marathon’s fundraising efforts support critical medical research into cures, cutting-edge diagnostic and clinical treatments, and programs that make the hospital experience more comfortable for pediatric patients and families. Their generous commitment to UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital was the first leadership gift to the building campaign. The UI Dance Marathon Pediatric Cancer Center on Level 11 is named in honor of the group’s generosity.
Walmart and Sam’s Club are dedicated supporters of UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital. As Iowa’s only comprehensive children’s hospital, UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital serves patients in each of Iowa’s 99 counties. And so it is fitting that, through their partnership with Children’s Miracle Network, Walmart and Sam’s Club associates, customers, and members throughout Iowa and the region have helped fund this new, state-of-the-art facility by directing donations at cash registers and participating in creative in-store fundraising activities. To recognize the generosity of Walmart and Sam’s Club, the Walmart and Sam’s Club 10th Floor Inpatient Unit and toddler playroom were named in their honor.
