Dr. Lois Bigger Gehring Awardees

Lois Bigger Gehring, a great friend of the Department of Biochemistry, has created an endowment for the Department to support graduate students.  She earned her BA in biology from Cornell College, her MS in microbiology from the University of Iowa, and her PhD in microbiology from Cambridge University.  While at Harvard Medical School in 1954, she published a very significant study in Nature on the inhibition of Clostridium lecithinase by cystine.  She is a former faculty member at the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University and the wife of Dr. Frederick W. Gehring, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Michigan.

The inaugural winners of the Dr. Lois Bigger Gehring Awards are

  • Susan O’Donnell, an American Heart Association Fellow with Madeline Shea
  • Bret Freudenthal, an American Heart Association Fellow with Todd Washington
  • Tyson Shepherd, a Pharmacology NRSA Fellow with Ernesto Fuentes
  • Lawrence Gray, a Pharmacology NRSA Fellow with Shahram Khademi
