Department mourns passing of Denis Oliver

Denis Oliver, a 1971 PhD with Roger Chalkley in the Department of Biochemistry, passed away on January 19. As a graduate student and post-doctoral fellow, Denis Oliver developed and refined methods for fractionating histones, related histone protein synthesis to its assembly in the nucleus, and developed one of the earliest models of DNA-bound histones that did not invoke the presence of free phosphate groups. Oliver was later the Director of the UI Physician Assistant Program and Head of Associated Medical Sciences at the Carver College of Medicine.
