Price lab featured on the August cover of Molecular Cell

Thursday, August 20th, 2015

MOLCEL_59_4.c1.inddDavid Price‘s lab was featured on the August 20 cover of Molecular Cell. The article entitled “THZ1 Reveals Roles for Cdk7 in Co-transcriptional Capping and Pausing,”shows how a Cdk7 inhibitor, THZ1, dramatically impacts CTD phosphorylation, co-transcriptional capping, pausing, and P-TEFb-dependent productive elongation by disrupting an ordered exchange of factors after initiation. These results provide mechanistic insights into the anti-proliferative and super-enhancer-selective effects of THZ1 seen by others. Kyle Nilson, (Molecular and Cellular Biology Graduate Student in the Price Lab) was first author of this work. John Brogie (Biochemistry Graduate Student), Michael Turek (Biochemistry Undergraduate Major), and Jiannan Guo (Former Biochemistry Postdoc, Price Lab) also contributed to this work. The cover design by Kyle Nilson features and experiment “performed” by Nicholas Mullen (Biochemistry Undergraduate Major).

The article is also featured in a preview by Drs. Frédéric Coin and Jean-Marc Egly entitiled “Revisiting the Function of CDK7 in Transcription by Virtue of a Recently Described TFIIH Kinase Inhibitor.”

Congratulations Price Lab!!

Highlights from the 65th Anniversary and 4th Annual Retreat

Monday, August 26th, 2013

The 2013 Biochemistry 65th Anniversary and 4th Annual Retreat, organized by Lori Wallrath, Charles Brenner, Maria Spies, Earle Stellwagen, Mark Miller, Lacy Barton, and Maren Rogers, was held on Saturday, August 24. The scientific program at the Levitt Center for University Advancement featured talks by Charles Brenner and Catherine Musselman, Director of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center, Dale Abel, and Director of the Iowa Institute of Human Genetics, Richard Smith. In addition, Gary Firestone (1980 PhD with Ed Heath), Tristram Parslow (1977 MD/PhD with Daryl Granner), Bob Deschenes (faculty from 1989-2004),  and Debbie Thurmond (1997 PhD with Alan Goodridge) gave scientific presentations.

The poster session featured 39 posters. Six total awards were given in three categories. In the undergraduate division, first place went to Dylan Thiemann (Wallrath lab), and second place to Liam Hovey (Shea lab). In the Postdoc/Research Assistant/Associate category, Jiannan Guo (Price lab) and Rebecca Fagan (Brenner lab) won first and second places, respectively . Two Lois Bigger Gehring Awards were given to support graduate student travel to research conferences. Lacy Barton (Geyer lab) and Jessica Maiers (DeMali lab) each won this award for best poster in the graduate student category.

The dinner at the Athletics Hall of Fame featured thoughts and reflections from PhD graduates of the department, including Morey Slodki (1955), Charles Fishkin (son of Arthur Fishkin, 1957), Billy Hudson (1966), Liskin Swint-Kruse (1995), and a video message from Alap Subramanian (1964). Along with former faculty members Charles Swenson, Robert Barker, Earle Stellwagen, Arthur Spector, Bryce Plapp, Robert Roskoski, Larry Solomonson, Alice Fulton, and Daryl Granner.

Thanks to everyone for participating.

Highlights of the third annual Biochemistry Retreat

The 2012 Biochemistry Retreat, organized by Lori Wallrath, Todd Washington, John Brogie and Julie Lueth, was held on Saturday, August 24 at the Coralville Public Library. Short talks were given in the morning by Ernesto Fuentes, Karina Kruth (Rubenstein lab), Shyamal Subramanyam (M. Spies lab), Michael Schnieders, Brandon Davies, Charles Brenner, Jessica Maiers (DeMali lab) and Adrian Elcock. After lunch, talks were given by Maria Spies, David Price and Eric Taylor.

The poster session featured 29 posters. Eight total awards were given in three categories: in the undergraduate division, James Bullard (Geyer lab), Melinda Martin (Geyer lab) and Alexander Greiner (Rubenstein lab) won first, second and third, respectively; in the Postdoc/Research Assistant/Associate category, William Jones (M. Spies lab), Jiannan Guo (Price lab) and Christy Mei (Brenner lab) won first, second and third, respectively.

Two Lois Bigger Gehring Awards were given to support graduate student travel to research conferences. Xiaowen Sun (DeMali lab) and Yuan Pan (Baker lab) each won this award for best poster in the graduate student category.

Thanks to everyone for participating.

Next year the retreat will be centered around the Department’s 65th Birthday. Be sure to save the dates: August 23-25, 2013.

Three members of the department receive American Heart Association awards

Wednesday, June 13th, 2012

Defying all odds, three members of the department have received American Heart Association monies after the winter application cycle. This reflects a 100 percent success rate for AHA applications in the department for that cycle.

Dr. Madeline Shea received a Grant-in-Aid award for her work entitled “Calmodulin-Mediated Regulation of Calcineurin”. The long-term goal is to understand the calcium-mediated effects of calcineurin on the events that commit a cell to become heart muscle.

Dr. Jiannan Guo, a postdoctoral fellow with David Price, was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship to support his work on the transcription elongation by RNA Polymerase II.

Xu Liu, a graduate student with Ernie Fuentes, was awarded a predoctoral fellowship to complete his PhD work on “Determining the mechanism of Tiam1/syndecan1 signaling in cell adhesion and migration.”

Congratulations to Madeline, Jiannan and Xu for these awards!
