Swain accepts Undergraduate Advisor Position in Biochemistry

Biochemistry has created a new position of Undergraduate Adviser, which will be held by Dr. Elisabeth Swain.  Biochemistry undergraduates will continue to be advised as freshman by the Academic Advising Center.  In the spring of their freshman year, they will transition to departmental advising, which will be handled by Elisabeth.

Elisabeth is a 1993 University of Iowa PhD and has served as a Lecturer in Biochemistry since 1996.  Her honors include the 2005 and the 2011 College of Pharmacy P1 Teacher of the Year.  She was the first to offer an online Biochemistry course at the University of Iowa in the fall of 2010 and she led the redesign of 99:140, the undergraduate Biochemistry laboratory course in the spring of 2011, focusing on lactate dehydrogenase.  In the 2013-2014 academic year, she will continue to teach 99:140 in addition to holding the role of Undergraduate Adviser.

Swain selected as the 2011 College of Pharmacy P1 Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to Dr. Elisabeth Swain, Lecturer in Biochemistry, who was selected as the 2011 College of Pharmacy P1 Teacher of the Year. The selection was based on student voting, letters of support from students, and the selection committee’s review of  Dr. Swain’s teaching philosophy. She will be recognized this fall at the College’s Scholarship Reception. Dr. Swain was also honored with this award in 2005.

Dr. Elisabeth Swain reappointed

Dr. Elisabeth Swain, a 1993 PhD from the University of Iowa and Lecturer in Biochemistry since 1996 has been reappointed to the faculty for an additional three year term. Named the UI College of Pharmacy “Non-Pharmacy Teacher of the Year” in 2005, Liz will take primary responsibility for teaching one-semester biochemistry survey courses for first year dental, pharmacy and physician assistant students. She will also offer 99:110, the one-semester introduction to biochemistry for undergraduates in the fall and develop the online version of this course to be offered in the spring. She and Todd Washington are redesigning 99:140, the biochemistry laboratory course, which she will offer next spring. A lecturer par excellence with students in five different colleges (liberal arts & sciences, engineering, dentistry, pharmacy and medicine), she is a true departmental all-star.
