Drs. Wallrath, Geyer, and Musselman among speakers at the Midwest Chromatin and Epigenetic Meeting

The 2014 Midwest Chromatin and Epigenetic Meeting was held on May 18, 19, and 20 at the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery (WID) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Speakers from the University of Iowa included Frederick Domann, Catherine Musselman, Pamela Geyer and Lori Wallrath; poster presenters included Lacy Barton, Heather Brockway, Diane Cryderman, Lynne Dieckman, Daniel Ferrell, and Tyler Weaver.

Over 200 attendees, representing eighteen states and four countries, presented their current research findings on transcriptional regulation, chromatin structure, and epigenetics as it relates to nutrition, the environment and human disease.

The prestigious Journal of Biological Chemistry‘s Herb Tabor Young Investigator Award was given to Andrew DeVilbiss, a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin.

Dr. Wallrath co-organized the event with John Denu of the University of Wisconsin and Raul Urrutia of the Mayo Clinic.

Taylor and Musselman receive HCCC’s Institutional Research Grant

Congratulations to Drs. Eric Taylor and Catherine Musselman for successfully competing for seed grant funding from the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Institutional Research Grant from the American Cancer Society. Taylor received funding for his project titled “Metabolically Reprogramming Sarcomas Towards Differentiation” and Musselman for her project “Mechanism of PHF1 as a Regulator of the Oncogene EZH2.”

The 2013 Biochemistry 65th Anniversary and 4th Annual Retreat, organized by Lori Wallrath, Charles Brenner, Maria Spies, Earle Stellwagen, Mark Miller, Lacy Barton, and Maren Rogers, was held on Saturday, August 24. The scientific program at the Levitt Center for University Advancement featured talks by Charles Brenner and Catherine Musselman, Director of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center, Dale Abel, and Director of the Iowa Institute of Human Genetics, Richard Smith. In addition, Gary Firestone (1980 PhD with Ed Heath), Tristram Parslow (1977 MD/PhD with Daryl Granner), Bob Deschenes (faculty from 1989-2004),  and Debbie Thurmond (1997 PhD with Alan Goodridge) gave scientific presentations.

The poster session featured 39 posters. Six total awards were given in three categories. In the undergraduate division, first place went to Dylan Thiemann (Wallrath lab), and second place to Liam Hovey (Shea lab). In the Postdoc/Research Assistant/Associate category, Jiannan Guo (Price lab) and Rebecca Fagan (Brenner lab) won first and second places, respectively . Two Lois Bigger Gehring Awards were given to support graduate student travel to research conferences. Lacy Barton (Geyer lab) and Jessica Maiers (DeMali lab) each won this award for best poster in the graduate student category.

The dinner at the Athletics Hall of Fame featured thoughts and reflections from PhD graduates of the department, including Morey Slodki (1955), Charles Fishkin (son of Arthur Fishkin, 1957), Billy Hudson (1966), Liskin Swint-Kruse (1995), and a video message from Alap Subramanian (1964). Along with former faculty members Charles Swenson, Robert Barker, Earle Stellwagen, Arthur Spector, Bryce Plapp, Robert Roskoski, Larry Solomonson, Alice Fulton, and Daryl Granner.

Lynne Dieckman defends PhD Thesis

Lynne Dieckman, a Molecular and Cellular Biology PhD student mentored by Todd Washington, has successfully defended her thesis, entitled “Structure and Functional Studies of Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen Mutant Proteins Defective in Translesion Synthesis and Mismatch Repair.” Lynne has accepted a position as a post-doctoral researcher in the lab of Catherine Musselman.  She is very enthusiastic about her work there in chromatin biology and her future career in teaching. Congratulations to Lynne!

Department announces hiring of Dr. Catherine Musselman

The Department of Biochemistry is pleased to announce the hiring of Dr. Catherine Musselman. Dr. Musselman was the standout in an extremely competitive structural biology faculty search run by Dr. M. Todd Washington and colleagues. She will begin as a tenure track assistant professor on July 31 and plans to focus on deciphering epigenetic mechanisms of gene regulation and how misregulation of these pathways is associated with disease.

Dr. Musselman is a 2005 MS and a 2007 PhD in chemistry from the University of Michigan with Drs. Hashim Al-Hashimi and Ioan Andricioaei. As a graduate student, she used molecular dynamics simulations and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to elucidate the structural dynamics of TAR, an RNA molecule from the human AIDS virus.

In 2007, she returned to her native Colorado to perform post-doctoral research with Dr. Tatiana Kutateladze at the Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora. In Dr. Kutateladze’s laboratory, Dr. Musselman characterized epigenetic effector domains using NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography and other biochemical and biophysical techniques. During her time as a post-doctoral fellow, she was supported by individual fellowships from the American Heart Association, the National Institutes of Health, and the Cancer League of Colorado. Her post-doctoral work produced sixteen publications, eight as first author.

As a new faculty member at Iowa, Dr. Musselman brings sophisticated questions and techniques to the analysis of the protein and nucleic acid associations of the polycomb group 2 complex and the interactions of effector domain proteins with modified nucleosomes. She is described by faculty colleagues as a perfect match with members of the Biochemistry department because she integrates interests in gene expression, chromatin, metabolism, and the structural basis of macromolecular function. Dr. Musselman is the 9th new primary faculty member in Biochemistry since July 1, 2009.
