Shea and FUTURE program featured in Biophysical Society Newsletter

Madeline Shea was featured in the Biophysical Society October 2013 Newsletter. As the “Biophysicist in Profile,” Shea discussed her passion for biophysics from her undergraduate studies at CalTech to the present. In addition, the article discusses how Dr. Shea founded the University of Iowa’s Fostering Undergraduate Talent—Uniting Research and Education in Biomedicine program. The group sponsors faculty members from primarily undergraduate institutions to bring a student and work in a lab at the Carver College of Medicine over the summer. Adrian Elcock was quoted, “She has also been an outstanding leader in developing ties with other educational institutions in Iowa. In doing so, she has positively impacted the scientific careers of students and faculty well beyond the boundaries of our university.” Mazel tov, Madeline!

The symposium also included the presentation of two new undergraduate awards, made possible by a gift from Alap Subramanian. The H.G. Wittmann Scholar Award was presented to Stephen Siemonsma (Elcock lab) and the H.G. Khorana Scholar Award was presented to Allyson Mayer (Brenner lab), recognizing their exceptional understanding of biochemistry and its value to society.

Highlights of the third annual Biochemistry Retreat

The 2012 Biochemistry Retreat, organized by Lori Wallrath, Todd Washington, John Brogie and Julie Lueth, was held on Saturday, August 24 at the Coralville Public Library. Short talks were given in the morning by Ernesto Fuentes, Karina Kruth (Rubenstein lab), Shyamal Subramanyam (M. Spies lab), Michael Schnieders, Brandon Davies, Charles Brenner, Jessica Maiers (DeMali lab) and Adrian Elcock. After lunch, talks were given by Maria Spies, David Price and Eric Taylor.

The poster session featured 29 posters. Eight total awards were given in three categories: in the undergraduate division, James Bullard (Geyer lab), Melinda Martin (Geyer lab) and Alexander Greiner (Rubenstein lab) won first, second and third, respectively; in the Postdoc/Research Assistant/Associate category, William Jones (M. Spies lab), Jiannan Guo (Price lab) and Christy Mei (Brenner lab) won first, second and third, respectively.

Two Lois Bigger Gehring Awards were given to support graduate student travel to research conferences. Xiaowen Sun (DeMali lab) and Yuan Pan (Baker lab) each won this award for best poster in the graduate student category.

Miles Pufall receives Carver Young Investigator Award

Miles Pufall has been awarded a Carver Young Investigator Award from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust for his project, “Understanding glucocorticoid resistance in B cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia.”

This is a three year, $345,000 award to investigate the molecular basis for steroid resistance in acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Dr. Pufall was selected as the sole applicant from the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa. He joins Drs. Lori Wallrath, Adrian Elcock, Todd Washington and Ernesto Fuentes as an early-career recipient of a Carver Trust award.

Adrian Elcock recieves new R01

Dr. Adrian Elcock was recently awarded a new NIGMS/NIH R01 entitled “Molecular Simulations of Cotranslational Folding.” Dr. Elcock has been awarded ~$250,000/year for four years to study how the synthesis and folding of proteins are coupled to each other.

Biochemistry faculty present summer and fall talks

Biochemistry Faculty have been traveling the world this summer and into the fall for research talks in many locales. Adrian Elcock presented at the EMBO Conference in Austria in May. Charles Brenner presented at the FASEB Summer Research Conference on NAD Metabolism and Signaling in Italy in September, at the 1st International Chemical Biology Conference in Kansas City and the Environmental Mutagen Society Conference in Montreal in October. David Price chaired a session and presented a talk at the Summer Research Conference on Transcriptional Elongation in Health and Disease, also in Lucca, Italy in September. He also gave an extended talk at the Cold Spring Harbor meeting on Mechanisms of Eukaryotic Transcription. Dr. Price will be giving a seminar for the Department of Molecular Biosciences at Northwestern University later this month.

Dr. Shun Zhu

Congratulations are due to our newest PhD, Shun Zhu. A student of Adrian Elcock, Dr. Zhu successfully defended his thesis on “Computational and experimental studies of protein kinase-inhibitor interactions.”  

After graduation from the University of Iowa, he plans to conduct postdoctoral research in the U.S. to further broaden his scientific vision. Ultimately, he plans to apply his knowledge in computational structural biology to the development of drugs against human diseases and cancer. Watch this space for an announcement of post-doctoral plans.

McDonough, who came back to give a talk at the Lata Symposium on The Genetics of Type 2 Diabetic End-Stage Renal Disease in Africans. Caitrin, a former student of Lori Wallrath, graduated with Honors in  Biochemistry in 2005. Having finished her PhD in Molecular Medicine and Translational Science, she is now a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Florida.
