Congratulations to Dr. Ernesto Fuentes, who recently received a supplement to his NSF CAREER Award. The supplement supports the sabbatical of Dr. David Speckhard, a chemistry professor at Loras College, to use NMR and X-ray crystallography to dissect the molecular origins of specificity in Tiam 1-family domains.
One of Biochemistry’s most illustrious graduates, Lourdes Cruz, is returning to campus on June 10th to receive a Carver College of Medicine Distinguished Alumna Award.
Dr. Cruz, a 1968 PhD gradwith Clarence Berg, is known for her discovery of toxins in the venom of marine snails. This finding has contributed to the development of pain killers and molecular probes to study brain function. Winner of the 2010 L’Oréal-UNESCO award for Women in Science, Cruz is currently a Professor Emeritus at the University of the Philippines, where she has spent the majority of her career. She also carries the title of National Scientist.
Dr. Cruz will present a Biochemistry Seminar entitled “Deadly Cone Snails, Molecular Diversity & Poor Communities” in 2117 MERF on Friday, June 10th at 4:00 pm. Please join us for a reception in Dr. Cruz’s honor before the seminar in the MERF Break Room (3113 MERF) at 3:00 pm.
